Johannes left Switzerland with his brother on 10 JUL 1835. There were relatives in America, so he went to Ragersville, Ohio, 3 OCT 1835, locating on a farm, near the farm of Housily Zimmerman, a relative. The farm lays 1 1/2 miles SW of Ragersville.
His passage to America was paid, we believe, by a Frenchman by the name of Racine de Calmus. He acted as guide and interpreter for this man, who was blind. In view of this, it would seem that Johannes could speak some English and French, as well as Swiss. One place in his account book he used the French spelling of his given name and signed "Jean" Stubi.
Once married in 1837, they settled on a farm 1 1/4 miles E of Ragersville in Ohio, on what is known as the Ruddey Buehler farm. Johannes was a stone mason by trade. They lived in Ohio for about 30 years. In 1868 he and his wife, with the children who were yet at home, came to Michigan. They settled on what is now known as the David Steeby farm, Leighton Township, Allegan County. Johannes and his wife lived on this farm until their deaths.
About two years before the family came to Michigan, two of the older boys had come to Michigan and settled on the farm now known as the John Steeby farm in the western part of Leighton Township. It was at this time the name was changed to the more English form of Steeby.
