Index of Cottons associated with Brutus Twp:
Cottons
associated with Newbury Twp., Lagrange Co, IN
Thomas COTTON of Canterbury Twp, Windham Co, CT
This Thomas is associated with Brutus Twp because his son
Ezra lived there in 1830. It is also possible that he is
the Thomas who is buried in Owasco Twp, Cayuga Co, NY, where
another BATES family (b.1804) is also buried.
ABT 1748? born
11 APR 1771 married Lydia BATES in Fair Haven, CT [Barbour collection] [Ancestry.com]

unless his gender was recorded incorrectly.

Thomas COTTON of Owasco Twp, Cayuga Co, NY
possibly the same as the Thomas (b.1787) who married Mary BROOKS,
but that Thomas seems to have moved to Seneca Co, OH. This
could instead be the same as Thomas of Canterbury, CT.
buried in Porter Cemetery, Owasco Twp [Porter Cemetery records]
also buried there is a Rhoda COTTON, and a BATES family
(Thomas of Canterbury, CT married a BATES.)
There are no Thomas COTTONs indexed in any federal census of Owasco Tw

Aaron COTTON of Brutus Twp, Cayuga Co, NY
possibly a close relative of Thomas and Lydia (BATES) COTTON
(for reasoning, see 1810 census discussion below)
1782 born in Connecticut [1850 census]
BEF 1810 married Margarite MYERS [death certificate of David Cotton, per Sean Gilson]
who is probably the daughter of Orra MYERS [History of Bainbridge]
Another piece of supporting evidence is that in the 1840 census,
Aaron and Andrew MYERS (named in the above history) are in
Unadilla, Otsego Co, NY which is where Cynthia COTTON is also.
6 AUG 1810 in census in Jericho, Chenango Co, NY [Ancestry.com]
Note Aaron and Andrew MYERS families are adjacent, and
comparing this to the 1800 census for Ezra COTTON (where Aaron
and Andrew MYERS are almost adjacent), it seems likely that
Aaron COTTON now has the land that was Ezra's, and suggests
that they might be brothers or other close relatives.

was also a carpenter [History of Kent Co, MI] Update: the [1850 mortality schedule] confirms that he was indeed a carpenter. |

Susan COTTON, daughter of Aaron and Margaret Cotton above
This conclusion is based on her maiden name appearing on
her son Samuel's death certificate, and Susan's family living
in the same household as Aaron and Margaret in 1860, and the
1820 census entry for Aaron showing an unaccounted-for female
of the correct age to be Susan.

Cynthia COTTON, possibly daughter of Aaron and Margaret COTTON above Cynthia does appear to be the sister of Sarah Ann Cotton since Cynthia and her husband Adley appear in Sarah's daughter Elnora's family bible. However, both Cynthia and Sarah appear in 1880 as having parents born in NY whereas Aaron and Margaret were born in CT and NJ, respectively. Furthermore, in the family bible, the death entry for "Father Cotton" doesn't match Aaron. However, in the 1865 census, Aaron and Margaret are living with Cynthia, and in the 1850 census, a "Sarah A." is in Aaron's household. 23 SEP 1824 born in Guilford, Chenango Co, NY [Elnora Hutchinson family bible, acc. to Pat McIntyre] OCT 1824 born [1900 census] 14 FEB 1826 future husband Jerome HUTCHINSON born in Guilford, Chenango Co, NY [Elnora Hutchinson family bible, acc. to Pat McIntyre] 1 JUN 1840 possibly in census in Sherburne Twp, Chenango Co, NY [Ancestry.com] 1 male 50-60 (Aaron 58) 1 female 40-50 (Margaret 48) 2 females 10-15 (Sarah 16, Harriet 12) 2 females 5-10 (Hannah 9, Betsey 6) 1 male 0-5 (Gilbert 3) and next door, Richard Cotton: 1 male 20-30 (Richard 23-25) 1 female 20-30 (Olive 23-26) 1 JUN 1850 possibly in census in Pittsfield Twp, Otsego Co, NY [Ancestry.com] 213 214 Aaron Cotton 68 M Farmer Connecticut Margaret " 58 F New Jersey Sarah A.
