Clovis (Chlodowig, Ludwig, Ludovicus, Louis or Lewis), King of the Salic
Franks, 481-511, defeated the Roman general Syagrius near Soissons, 486, and
the Alemanni, 496. Through the influence of Chlotilda, he was baptized as a
Christian by St. Remy at Rheims, 25 Dec. 496. He defeated the Burgundians,
500, fixed his court at Paris, 507, defeated the Visigoths at Voulon near
Poiters, 507. At the time of his death he was the sole king of France.
Chlotilda was later canonized as a saint, and is commemorated on the 3rd of
June.

He was king of Soissons, 511-561, which consisted of Soissons, Laon, Amiens,
Cambrai, Terouanne and Limoges, being largely the original Merovingian kingdom.
He conquered Burgundy and provence, 534-536; from 558 until his death, 561, he
was the sole king of the Franks.
A dau. of the king of the Thuringian Franks; she became a nun at Poiters, 554.
