Identifying the father of Sylvester Balcom
Below, [Balcombe Family] refers to
Frank W. Balcomb, "A First Book of the Balcombe Family",
Peabody, Mass.: Fraedy Press., microfiche #6019757.
Index of timelines:
Unrelated (at least not closely):
Jacob BALCOM of Connecticut (c.1770-aft 1800), #(John 4.viii) in [Balcombe Family]
Jacob BALCOM of Attleboro MA (1763-1839), #(Alexander 31) in [Balcombe Family]
Jacob BALCOM, father of Sylvester
ABT 1770 born
[1830 census]
BET 1797 - 1803 son Sylvester BALCOM born
1800 there are
Jacob Balcoms in
Norfolk, Litchfield, CT 10010 00100 (see Jacob of CT)
Attleboro, Bristol, MA 11010 02010 (see
Jacob of Attleboro)
Norton, Bristol, MA 00010 10100 (see
Jacob of Rehoboth)
From later censuses, we would expect to find
1 male 0-10 (Sylvester)
1 male 26-45 (Jacob)
2 females 0-10
1 female 26-45
which would be 10010 20010
However, the Jacob of Attleboro and the Jacob of Rehoboth
are both still there in 1820, and so cannot be our Jacob.
Also the Jacob of Framingham MA is a fourth
possibility
who has not yet been found in the 1800 census.

a much younger Jacob Balcom, rather than Jacob the

In 1830, Sylvester Balcom who married Lucinda Stafford, is found in Hanover Twp., Chautauqua Co., NY, living next door to the Stafford family. In 1820, Jacob Balcom (but no other Balcom) is found in the same location, age 45+, with a son (among others) the right age to be Sylvester Balcom, so we assume this is the father of Sylvester. There are 3 males age 16-26, and the youngest under 10, so we assume that the oldest would be at least 20, making Jacob married before 1800.
A search of other censuses and Internet sources revealed that there were four Jacob Balcoms born around 1770, which we will refer to as Jacob of Connecticut, Jacob of Attleboro (Mass.), Jacob of Rehoboth (Mass.), and Jacob of Framingham (Mass.). Checking Frank W. Balcomb, "A First Book of the Balcombe Family", Peabody, Mass.: Fraedy Press., microfiche #6019757, confirmed that there were exactly four Jacob Balcoms born around 1770, which descend from (between them) three different Balcom immigrants.
We now wish to determine which of those four Jacob Balcoms could be the father of Sylvester Balcom.
In the 1820 census, when Jacob the father of Sylvester was in Hanover Twp, two other Jacob Balcoms are found in other locations: Attleboro (Mass.), and Rehoboth (Mass.). This rules out those two, leaving either Jacob of Connecticut or Jacob of Framingham. We now look more closely at those two.
According to the Balcomb book, Jacob of Connecticut was born about 1770 in Winchester, Litchfield Co., CT., with older siblings born in Mansfield, Tolland Co., CT. His siblings married in either Winchester or Norfolk, in the same county. In 1790, the family is found in Litchfield, Litchfield Co, CT. In the 1800 census, Jacob is now married, with one son under 10, living in Norfolk, Litchfield Co, CT. One sister is known to have previously moved to Oneida Co. in central NY. In 1810 and after, no Jacob Balcoms are found in Connecticut. Hence while there is no evidence that conclusively rules out Jacob of Connecticut, there is also no evidence yet that he survived beyond 1810, and no evidence yet that links him to western NY.
Jacob of Framingham was born about 1770 in Framingham, Middlesex Co., MA. In 1790, per the Balcomb book, his father Isaac was in the census in New Fane, Windham Co., VT (and a search of this census confirmed this, but there is no male of Jacob’s age there), and in 1792 was in the Annapolis, Nova Scotia census. Jacob had a son Augustus about 1800 and probably had other children as well according to the Balcomb book. One Internet source shows another son Charles born about 1802. The Balcomb book states that Jacob was reported to have lived at Gowanda (in Persia Twp, with Gowanda bordering Perrysburg Twp), Cattaraugus Co., NY, and was at Leon, Cattaraugus Co., NY in 1845. A Gowanda history on the Internet confirms that a Jacob Balcom moved there in 1818, and a history of Perrysburg Twp. lists Jacob Balcomb as a member of the Baptist church there in 1821. There are no Jacob Balcombs in Cattaraugus Co., NY in the 1820 census, but in 1830, Jacob and Augustus are both found in the county, Jacob in Perrysburg Twp., and Augustus in Otto Twp.
The following facts argue that Jacob father of Sylvester is indeed Jacob of Framingham:
1) Hanover Twp in Chautauqua Co. borders Perrysburg Twp Cattaraugus Co. The father of Sylvester was in the former in 1820. Jacob of Framingham is not in Cattaraugus Co in the 1820 census, but attended church in the latter location in 1821 so must have lived nearby in 1820 (having moved to the area in 1818). This strongly suggests that they are the same person, with Jacob living just across the county line into Hanover Twp in 1820, with a minor move into Cattaraugus Co by 1830.
2) Jacob of Framingham is believed (by the author of the Balcom book) to have other unlisted children in addition to Augustus, and Sylvester’s birth year of “about 1803” (from his age in the 1861 Ontario census) is not in conflict with the birth years of Augustus (abt.1800) and Charles (abt.1802).
3) The children’s ages listed in the 1820 census of Hanover Twp, and in the 1830 census of Perrysburg Twp line up such that we must assume they are the same family. In the 1820 census of Hanover Twp, there are (among other children) 3 sons age 16-26, which would be Augustus, Charles, and Sylvester.
This gives the following combined timeline:
Jacob BALCOM, father of Sylvester,
son of Isaac and Sarah BALCOM
father Isaac was a soldier in the Revolution. He served at
Bennington in Capt. Stockwell's company of Col. Job
Cushing's regiment. He is recorded in the Vermont census

census.
